"Kate's Club (A Happy Moment)"
by Kate's Club Kid Shaina Pittman
My mom parked the dark blue Mercedes truck. As we walked down the sidewalk the bright and yellow sun kissed our brown skin. Sooner or later sweat began to dance its way across our faces as we made it to the door. We each took one hand and wiped the dripping sweat.
As we opened the door, we noticed blue and yellow everywhere in the building. My mom said, I’m going to sit down. I said, okay. As I walked I was nervous. I didn’t know anybody. A lady came up to me and said hi. She was thin, but not too skinny. She had brown hair and dark brown eyes. She was a beautiful woman. She said, hi, what is your name? I answered, Shaina. I said I was new. Then she told me that her name was Ms.Kate!
She introduced me to a girl named Tajhye.
Tajhye had on a brown and gold glittery shirt. She had dark, dark brown eyes and blackish, wavy hair. The waves in her hair looked like the ones in the ocean. I did the usual, the shy wave and my name. She did the same. As I got to know her she told me about her loved one and then I told her about my dad who was killed when he was in his early 20s. We hung out with each other.
Buddies are grown-ups that volunteer to help out with the kids to help them have fun! One of the buddies named Ms. Karen came up to me and Tajhye. She had strawberry, red hair that looked soft like a river of silk. She said, hi, is this your first time here? I said, yes. She was very excited and said me too! Next I met this crazy buddy. His name was Mr. Tarek. He said to me and Tajhye, well how are you doing ladies, with a unique accent.
Ms. Kate, who was the founder of Kate’s Club, called us to the middle of the carpet. She told us that she lost her mother when she was 12 years old and that she had started this group for kids who have lost a brother, sister or a parent. She said, I hope everybody is having a good time and you can go help yourself to some chicken nuggets from Chick-Fil-A, apple juice or fruit punch, and chips. Tajhye and I rushed into the room where all the fresh food was. We stabbed our forks in the chicken, then we reached our hands in the cold bucket of ice, fishing for apple juice. Last of all, we got barbeque potato chips! Mmmmmm mmmmmm!!! The chicken nuggets we tasted were hot and delicious, and they were juicy too. The icy cold, refreshing apple juice was so delicious also. The chips were salty and crunchy in every single bite.
It was almost time to go, but before that we sat in another circle. Ms.Kate told us that just because we lost a loved one doesn’t mean we are alone or that we are any different from other kids, that we are special, and that just because that one tragic thing happened doesn’t mean we have to be sad all of the time. I loved that saying. I knew that I would always remember that.
Next thing I knew it was time to go. I found my mom talking to one of the buddies. After they finished their conversation, we started to leave. I stopped my mom so I could say goodbye to Tajhye and we did. Then we left. We got back in our dark blue Mercedes and my mom drove off. She wanted to hear all about it. That was going to be easy because of all the fun that I had! I will never forget that exciting moment and whenever there is another outing, count me in! THANK YOU KATE’S CLUB!!!
